For most of 2025, two neighboring storefronts at 188 and 190 California Avenue had their lights off. The Loving Cup bar closed on New Year's Day 2025, according to Edible Reno-Tahoe. Next door, the space under Temple Yoga had sat closed for nearly 18 months by the time a bakery moved in this spring, This Is Reno reported.
Both doors are open again, and they reopened within a few weeks of each other. Savi Bakery took 190 California Ave. and held its grand opening on June 6. The Living Room, a 1970s-themed vinyl listening lounge, took The Loving Cup's old space at 188 and opened in late June. Between the bakery's mornings, the lounge's late nights, and the yoga studio upstairs, this one stretch of California Avenue now has posted hours from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. on its busiest days. It also covers the hours its longtime neighbors on the block leave open.
Downstairs From Temple Yoga, a Pastry Case Opens at 8
Pastry chef Savannah Rush started Savi Bakery on a soft opening in May, then held the grand opening in June, This Is Reno reported. The address carries some history. This Is Reno describes it as the old Satisfaction Pizza space, and Reno News & Review refers to it as the space previously occupied by Pizzeria Lupo. Upstairs, at 190 California Ave. #201a, Temple Yoga runs multiple classes daily, seven days a week. That makes the bakery the first stop at the bottom of the stairs.
In a press release quoted by Reno News & Review, Rush said her menu is built around "everyday decadence," with sweets influenced by a trip to Japan. That influence shows up throughout the menu on Savi's site:
- Gochujang-cheddar-scallion scones, alongside an Earl Grey-lavender version
- Miso-brown-butter chocolate chip cookies and matcha-white-chocolate cookies
- Tiramisu brownies and cream puffs
- Savory mushroom tarts for anyone who wants breakfast without sugar
- Espresso drinks, drip coffee and cold brew
Edible Reno-Tahoe's opening notice says the scratch-made pastries rotate daily and that hours are subject to change. So treat the list above as typical of the case, not a promise of what's in it on a given morning. Savi's posted hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. It is closed Monday and Tuesday.
The bakery closes at 2 p.m. The bar next door opens at 4.
Next Door, The Loving Cup Became a 1970s Living Room
The Living Room's co-owners are Tyler Colton, who also owns The Emerson and Selden in Midtown, and Maribel Garcia, who runs Desert Beats Collective. Reno News & Review gives the opening date as June 24, and Edible Reno-Tahoe gives June 19. Either way, the lounge has been open for about four months.
This was a full rebuild. This Is Reno's Nora Tarte, who grew up going to The Loving Cup, wrote that the new bar "wasn't a quick facelift." She said it "really redid the tired aesthetic and completely committed to the theme," and compared walking in to stepping onto the set of That '70s Show. Reno News & Review describes glass ball grapes, groovy wallpaper, and furniture from vintage shops. Edible calls it a space styled like an upscale living room and patio.
There's no fixed DJ schedule. On any given evening, one of the owners might be spinning vinyl. Reno News & Review reports that it's usually something from the '70s, disco if it's Colton, while Garcia brings what Colton called "a Latin flare." The cocktails follow the same era: maple white Russians, smoked old fashioneds, and, as Colton told the paper, "a lot of Japanese gins." Colton explained the idea to Reno News & Review this way: "Young people are drinking different. They're drinking higher end whiskeys. They want a nice cocktail. … I think people want experiences."
The Living Room's posted hours are 4 to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
How the Two New Tenants Fit the Block's Older Hours
The new arrivals joined a stretch that already had established neighbors. Centro, at 236 California Ave., is an evening spot. The Cheese Board, at 247 California Ave., describes itself as a Reno lunch eatery and catering business dating to 1981. Here are the currently posted hours for all four, plus Temple Yoga's daily classes:
| Address | Business | Posted hours |
|---|---|---|
| 188 California Ave. | The Living Room | Sun–Thu 4–11 p.m.; Fri–Sat 4 p.m.–1 a.m. |
| 190 California Ave. | Savi Bakery | Wed–Sun 8 a.m.–2 p.m.; closed Mon–Tue |
| 190 California Ave. #201a | Temple Yoga | Multiple classes daily, seven days a week |
| 236 California Ave. | Centro | Mon–Thu 4–10 p.m.; Fri–Sat 4–11 p.m.; no Sunday hours listed |
| 247 California Ave. | The Cheese Board | Mon–Fri 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sat 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; no Sunday hours listed |
The grid shows what the two openings added. Before this summer, the block's posted hours ran from The Cheese Board's 10 a.m. lunch opening to Centro's closing time. Savi pushes the start of the day back to 8 a.m. from Wednesday through Sunday. The Living Room adds two hours after Centro closes on Friday and Saturday, and one after it closes Monday through Thursday.
Sunday shows it most clearly. Neither Centro nor The Cheese Board lists Sunday hours, so on Sundays the block's posted hours belong entirely to 188 and 190: pastries and coffee until 2, yoga upstairs, then the lounge from 4 to 11. During the stretch when both storefronts were dark, none of these addresses had a posted Sunday.
Monday and Tuesday look different. Savi is closed both days, so the morning slot goes back to The Cheese Board's 10 a.m. opening. If the weekday plan is coffee before work, those two days need another stop.
These are the hours each business currently posts, and the bakery has said its hours may change. For a specific trip, a quick check of Savi's site or the @savibakeryreno and @thelivingroom_reno Instagram accounts is the most reliable way to confirm.
What the Neighbors Have Floated, and the Corner Still Open
The two new tenants already treat each other as neighbors. In the July roundup, Colton told Reno News & Review to keep an ear out for future "Coffee and Beats" collaborations between the bar and Savi. No date has been announced. Given that the bakery's day ends two hours before the bar's begins, how the two schedules would combine is something both accounts will likely share when they're ready.
At the other end of the block, 100 California Ave. turned over in the opposite direction this summer. Edible Reno-Tahoe reported that Black Rock Dessert planned its last scoop for June 5, 2026. Reno News & Review later reported that the shop's flavors live on through Algo Dulcito Desserts, a family-run dessert and coffee truck that parks at businesses and events around town. No new tenant has been announced for the space.
The route to the block got easier this year too. The two Arlington Avenue bridges over the Truckee River reopened in June after being replaced, KOLO reported. The new bridges have an Art Deco-inspired design, new lighting, and accessibility improvements. According to the RTC Washoe project page, Arlington Avenue and Wingfield Park are open again now that construction is finished.
Halloween weekend falls a few days after this post goes up, and neither Savi nor The Living Room has posted a special event for it. On Saturday, October 31, the posted schedule gives the building at 188 and 190 its full run: the pastry case from 8 to 2, classes upstairs, and the lounge from 4 p.m. until 1 a.m.
To me, small changes like two relit storefronts on one block are part of what makes Old Southwest Reno feel like home. If you're curious how they fit into the rest of the neighborhood, or you'd like to talk through what's changing on the streets around your own home, I'm glad to help.
